BUILDING CONSERVATION
The Old Firestation, 164 Bishopsgate, London, 2013

In June 2013 London Stone Conservation won a tender to repair extensive damage on the stone façade of this Grade II listed building.

During riots of the May Day demonstrations, a fire caused significant damage to the ornate stone façade on the lower elevation of the building.

Tesco delivery trolleys were set alight by protestors; the sheer intensity of the subsequent fire caused the stonework nearby to blow and become structurally unsafe, whilst the intense heat of the fire caused most of the first floor windows to break.

The particularly dense smoke produced by molten plastic caused deep staining to the stone surfaces.
The works included

  • the cleaning of the façade using a combination of DOFF and nebulous spray systems; later the use of the Torc system on lower elevations.

  • the replacement of ornate masonry at low level

  • the repair of windows and replacement of glass

  • the stripping and re-decoration of painted surfaces (window frames)

  • the repair and replacement of carved masonry and ashlar caused by corrosion to stonework at higher elevations

Part of the works entailed establishing a construction-phase plan, which was followed and updated throughout the project, as well as submission of the F10 form (notification of construction) to the HSE.

Due to the location and busy environment of this project, London Stone Conservation’s in-house H&S Officer was on site during the works to oversee proceedings and to liaise with subcontractors.

The guiding principle chosen for this project was a like-for-like repair and replacement of the fabric of the building.

The end result complement the original appearance of the building.
