BUILDING CONSERVATION
In & Out Club (Naval and Military Club), St. James’s Square, Piccadilly, London, 2013

In late 2012 London Stone Conservation were invited to carry out specialist works to the exterior and interior stone finishes of this Grade II listed private members’ club situated in St James’s Square, in the heart of the West End.

The intention was for minimum intervention and like-for-like repairs.
Replacements were only chosen in areas were the existing stone had been lost in its entirety or had corroded beyond reasonable repair.

The scope consisted of the alteration of paving levels in the inner courtyard, the restoration of the existing entrance steps and restoration on several of the internal stone floors.

The works were phased to the requirements of the client, with minimum disruption to the club’s members: the club remained open to its members throughout the works.

To keep the disruption and noise levels to a minimum, LSC decided to lift and remove the existing internal stone floors. The individual slabs were taken to LSC premises, where they were cleaned and repaired, before being re-delivered and re-fitted on site. Whilst this operation was time-consuming, it meant that the club could operate as usual.

The entrance steps had been repaired numerous times. In their current state, they were covered in rigid cement render with a concrete sub-base.

All surfaces had failed and were either broken or cracked. The removal of this cementicious carapace revealed the original stonework some inches below the surface. While there was still some core strength within the original Portland stone, the shape and detail had failed completely. The decision was taken nevertheless to use the original stone steps as a sub-base for the installation of new detailed treads and risers. The end result matches the original design and intention of the architecture.
