Facade Restoration

In 2012 London Stone Conservation were invited to take part in a two-phase program to transform an area of the Liberty department store, returning office space back to shop floor.

LSC were contracted to modify the existing stonework of the façade: changing existing windows into doorways for new entrances following the design of the existing building.

Phase I involved removing existing stonework, up to the window header height, to enable access to the site for the main renovation works by others.

The brief by English Heritage was to reuse as much of the existing stone as possible in creating the new openings. All of the existing stone was removed from site to LSC premises for safe storage.
In accordance with the new design by M R Partnership Architects, LSC started by setting out the existing stone units, re-measured and cut to size. Thus LSC were able to ascertain the extent of new stone required to match up against the existing fabric.

Samples were submitted for approval by Westminster Council’s Conservation officer. It was decided that Portland stone whitbed was as close a match as possible to the existing original.

The stone was masoned to the specified design at the LSC workshop premises. The plinth course was made from granite in order to absorb impact and also for low-maintenance cleaning.

Once the main building works had been completed some eight months later, Phase II of our program began.

A rigid steel frame was erected within the new openings to carry the weight of the stonework and also to enable a structure for the rest of the shop front doors.

Working closely with other subcontractors, the stone units were custom-fitted and tweaked on site to work well with the other components of the shop front.
The end result of the alteration works is in close keeping with the original design intention of the building and enhances its appearance.
