MONUMENT CONSERVATION
Blondin Memorial

Over the years, the memorial had deteriorated with lichen and other vegetation taking root. Our first step was cleaning the memorial using the English Heritage approved DOFF system, followed by carefully removing the sulphation crust by hand.

The missing parts of the Hope Allegory Figure (Anchor tip, shaft and chain) were remodelled in white wax to match the style and design of the original as closely as possible. Armature wire was attached to the original stonework in order to support the newly modelled sections. Once passed by English Heritage, the wax was carefully removed and new sections of a close matching statuary marble were carved as a direct copy.

To complete the restoration, LSC also removed, cleaned and reset the kerb stones and granite posts and repointed the entire monument with hydraulic lime mortar. The Marble entablatures had suffered from deep staining caused by the bronze frames, which sit between the marble and the stonework. With repeat application of poultice LSC were able to draw out most of the bronze staining before sealing the frame to halt further staining to the marble entablatures.

The result enhances the overall appearance of the memorial and returns the Monument back to its former glory.
