The Merton Road mosaic, created in the late 1920s, is the last surviving sign from the United Service Transport Company Ltd. Positioned on the front of the company’s Southfields garage, spanning 43 feet, this striking mosaic is adorned with intricate green and gold glass tiles, reflecting the company’s iconic branding.

The restoration, spearheaded by the Heritage of London Trust (HOLT) and supported by local firms, the Southfields Grid Residents’ Association (SGRA), and individual contributions, was entrusted to the specialists at London Stone Conservation. Guided by historical archives, the project aimed to faithfully restore this heritage treasure.

The mosaic had missing tesserae, a part blown glazed brick frame and cracks throughout, and was previously repaired with cement. The restoration involved extensive cleaning, removal of cement, and re-grouting of the cracks. Missing tesserae were replaced, including sourcing replacement tiles from Italy, and the mosaic was re-anchored to the wall.

Through expert mosaic restoration and stonework conservation, the intricate green and gold glass tiles have been revived, restoring this historic mosaic to its former glory nearly a century after its creation. The project stands as a testament to the importance of preserving our built heritage for future generations.
