The fountain was incorporated into the original 17^th Century gateway to the church of St Katharine Cree in 1965. Along with the fountain, a memorial stone was also incorporated when the gateway section was moved from the east end of the south wall to the northern wall of the garden.

London stone conservation was commissioned by HOLT for the repair and conservation of the drinking fountain and the original gateway structure. The project was funded by HOLT through a generous legacy gift from Christina Lowing, in memory of her father, Alfred Gravely.

We followed a comprehensive, less invasive principle of conservation and comprehensive program of repair works for the fountain. Cleaning included steam cleaning to remove organic staining and targeted poultice cleaning to address carbon and sulphation build-up. Failed cement repairs were carefully removed and replaced with appropriate lime mortar and stone indent repairs.  The plumbing system was fully reset, with all pipework flushed, the sump cleaned and emptied, a new pump installed, and the entire system tested to ensure the fountain was returned to full working order.
