The Surrey Street Fountain, located in the heart of Croydon, is a historic drinking fountain installed in 1896. Situated opposite the Green Dragon pub on the corner of the High Street and Surrey Street, the fountain is an excellent example of Victorian-era craftsmanship.

The drinking fountain is unique example of Victorian design of the late 19th Century. The fountain surroundings are primarily made of glazed terracotta tiles, and the bowl is made of polished granite. There are cast iron finials and plaques on the drinking fountain. On the drinking fountain side is the lion’s head plaque which holds push button and the waterspout and to the front is the memorial plaque.

London stone conservation was commissioned by HOLT in partnership with Croydon Council to restore the drinking fountain to a functional state. The restoration included cleaning, poulticing and the top part of the fountain was partially dismantled and re-set to close the failed joints and realign the tiles. Hairline cracks , Missing tiles and breaks in terracotta were remodelled to match the original tiles. One of cast iron finials which was missing has been replaced. A new push button was installed with the water coming out of the lion’s mouth. The drinking fountain is now fully functional with fresh clean drinking water accessible to the public.
