The London Bridge Alcove is one of fourteen installed on the Old London Bridge in 1762. Today, it rests on a cobbled base in the Courtyard Estates. Commissioned by Heritage of London Trust (HOLT), London Stone Conservation has recently restored the alcove.

While structurally stable, the Alcove showed signs of surface erosion and loss of detail. Years of exposure to a damp environment had encouraged moss, algae, and lichen growth, and its Portland stone had darkened in areas due to weathering and soot deposits.

Our team took on this restoration project in 2024. The works included a careful clean, repointing of open joints using lime mortar, and reinstating missing or damaged elements to the cornice string course and arch edge with matching stone. Corroded metal was treated, intrusive vegetation removed, and a limewash shelter coat applied, offering protection to more fragile areas and improving the Alcove’s visual cohesion.
