Stone & Mortar

We are skilled in matching stones and mortars to use in like-for-like conservation repairs. London Stone Conservation has a vast library of natural stone samples to use for comparison of stones for our projects. This allows us to positively identify stones and find the most suitable match in terms of quarry and bed type.

We use natural lime mortars in various applications within the conservation of buildings and structures consisting of stone or brick. We can slake our own lime, enabling us to gauge the exact strength and mixing ratio for a specific application. We have also been working with natural cement, which is based on a similar principle of that of hydraulic lime. Natural cement is made from lime and clay nodules, and – not to be confused with ordinary cement – has similar hydration properties to hydraulic limes.

In addition to the more traditional approaches, we are currently exploring the diverse use of Nano limes for the consolidation of friable and failing masonry, suited to larger scale projects within the listed building sector.

We also provide a mortar analysis service, to ensure that new or replacement work matches existing or historic mortars in performance and appearance.
